Ten Track Rundown (12/13/11)

Let’s do this! I just finished my stat paper and I wanna just listen to some music. So here’s ten tracks from my iTunes shuffle (no skips).

1. Thrice - “Stare At The Sun”: Not only is this a great song from Thrice’s earlier career, but it’s the live version. Absolutely stunning song full of energy, impressive guitar work, and a generally cosmic upbeat sound. The track is originally from The Artist In The Ambulance and is more hardcore/alternative than the band’s later work. Great track. I also recommend the acoustic version featured on the band’s retrospective album If We Could Only See Us Now, which is my favorite version.
2. Metallica - “Orion (Instrumental)”: This is a good track. It really displays what Metallica is musically capable of in terms of creating great thrash metal about the woes of life or death. The guitar work in the track is rather bleak, yet you can still headbang to it.
3. Zakk Wylde - “Suicide Note Part 1”: Okay, I’m not the biggest fan of Zakk’s vocal work. He sounds like a retarded Ozzy Osbourne. This track comes from the tribute album for Dimebag Darrell titled Getcha Pull!. It’s okay.
4. Nine Inch Nails - “And All That Could Have Been”: This live version of this track is fantastic. It’s a very ominous track with a great, creeping beginning. The track only evolves from there to become something fantastic. NIN never fails to deliver a new piece of dark, driving beauty with each track. I love how powerful this track is.
5. Amon Amarth - “Loke’s Treachery Part II: Tock’s Taunt”: Oh yeah! Amon Amarth! This track comes from their newest album Surtur Rising, which is by far one of the best albums of the year. This track is really good. It’s reminiscent of epic tracks like “Victorious March” on Versus The World. It has a very driving riff and some moments of light, cosmic melody. I love it.
6. Static-X - “Invincible”: Static-X is usually all about hardcore metal, but this track is one of their lighter, more melodic moments. It’s really interesting because you can feel the underlying aggression of the building riff for the first minute and a half as the chorus draws near. It’s good. It’s not the best, but it’s a cool track.
7. God Is An Astronaut - “Tempus Horizon”: Man, I love me some GIAA. This track is quite beautiful. It builds, as all GIAA tracks do, to a nice, not-too-intense climax twice. After the second rise, the track becomes really deep and diverse with multiple layers of sound. I couldn’t recommend just one GIAA track, but this is a pretty sweet one.
8. Boris - “Six, Three Times”: Not one of the best tracks off Boris’s album Pink, but it is quite jammy. It features plenty of Boris’s signature distortion and all-over-the-place guitar. It’s just a fun track to listen to and has a really cool solo at the end.
9. Steel Panther - “It Won’t Suck Itself”: These guys are amazingly fun. Their songs are so blatantly sexual and hilarious. They have a traditional ’80s hair metal vibe, but with more sexuality than any given Motley Crue song. This is metal you play when you need to be put in a good mood.
10. Blink-182 - “Wishing Well”: It’s funny how upbeat this ten track rundown ended. This is a pretty good track off Blink’s newest album Neighborhoods. The chorus is pretty cool and the guitar work is upbeat, but I don’t care for the little segments when Hoppus and DeLonge go “ladadadada”. It sounds a little ridiculous.
